Bomshel - Fight Like a Girl PDF Print E-mail
BomshelBomshel as a duo began when two young songwriters, Kristy Osmonson and Buffy Lawson, met in Nashville, Tennessee in the 1990s.  In addition to writing, they began performing together at the famous Tootsie’s Orchid Lounge and other venues around Nashville, eventually signing with Curb Records in 2006.  They charted four singles together, with the last being “The Power Of One,” which ended up as a cut from the soundtrack for the film “Evan Almighty.”

Following the release of that fourth single, in December 2007 Lawson left the duo and was replaced by Kelley Shepard, who made her initial contribution on the duo’s next two singles, “Just This Way” and “Cheater, Cheater,” but both failed to chart.  (“Cheater, Cheater” was later recorded and taken into the top 40 by Joey and Rory).

Osmonson and Shepard’s latest single, “Fight Like A Girl,” is the duo’s first single to hit the Top 40, and is also the title track of their official debut album which is expected to be released this coming August.  The lyric is comprised of a three part scenario that follows the challenges and hardships of a woman who is picked on as a little girl, seems to continuously hit the “glass ceiling” irrespective of how hard she works as a young woman, and then ultimately is diagnosed with cancer in her middle age years.  The inspirational words of her mother serve as the cohesive influence that helps her keep it together during those times of adversity:  “Love yourself, give ‘em hell, and fight like a girl.”

As it turns out, the song is actually about a close mutual friend named Jenny, who recently passed away from breast cancer.  Osmonson said,  “She inspired us.  She just lived everyday to the fullest. She took a really bad situation and kind of made this mission statement to fight it.”

“We really wanted to take a negative saying and turn it into something positive,” Shepard said. “For Jenny… for all girls.  I think women are so amazing and stay so helpful through some of the most trying things. We love ‘Fight Like a Girl’, it’s the best song to really encompass everything Bomshel stands for.”
