Listener Request - May 12, 2012

Hi Bob,

My name is Mecca, I am 18 years old and a senior at the local high school in Las cruces, New Mexico and I am graduating this month!  The song I am requesting is “Somebody’s Hero” by Jamie O’Neal”.  The first time I heard it on the radio, I thought immediately of my mom.  She has always been there for my little brother, two younger sisters and me.

When I was only five, my father left my mom.  And so, mom picked up all of our things and moved us all the way from Jacksonville, Florida to El Paso, Texas, where we moved in with my grandma.

Well, after three years as a divorced single mom and doing numerous jobs so she could help support us, she found an amazing man.  They have been married for nearly 10 years now and he loves all four of us kids dearly.

This song represents all the changes my mom has gone through and as I graduate high school and will be off to college soon, it will be a major step for both of us!  Thanks, mom.

Thank you Bob,
Las cruces, NM

Dear Bob,

I’m one of nine children and the oldest of the 3 girls, so I got to have all the responsibilities and was raised with tough love.  That, along with positive guidance from family and friends, I became the first person in my family to complete college, to travel and study abroad, and to explore beyond the city of Fresno.

As my parents worked 40 plus hours a week, my mom pounded into my head the importance of education, respect and hard work.  And she, more than anyone guided me to become the person I am today.  Every word she said I kept with me all the way through 4 long years at college and right up until now.

My mom may not know it, but it’s because of her voices in my head that I’ve achieved all I have.  Please play Chris Young’s “Voices” for my mom and me.
